Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg suits groups wanting a home with a sauna by the ski area that hosted the 2015 freestyle world championships. It is a rural municipality of under 2,000 people, so for old streets and a castle you drive to Murau.
Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg is a Styrian municipality of under 2,000 people, created in 2015 from two older communities and spread over more than 100 square kilometres at around 860 metres. Expect a rural municipality rather than a town centre. Our homes sit in one tight cluster, and they are mostly large: three bedrooms is typical, many sleep eight or more, nearly all have a sauna and some have a private pool. The Kreischberg itself stands at 1,981 metres, and the resort shares about 40 km of slopes with the neighbouring Rosenkranzhöhe; its snowpark opened in December 2015. Murau, the district town at 829 metres, supplies the castle, the Gothic parish church and the brewing history.
District town at 829 metres with a Renaissance-rebuilt castle, a Gothic parish church begun in 1284 and a brewing tradition documented since the 15th century.
Narrow-gauge line along the Mur from Unzmarkt to Mauterndorf, with a steam train that is a tourist attraction in Murau.
The other ski area that shared the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships with Kreischberg.
About 14 km from Murau, and the base of the Shakespeare in Styria festival since the summer of 2016.
Graz is the practical airport: British Airways flies there from Gatwick, and the drive is around an hour and 40 minutes. The train route from Graz main station changes at Unzmarkt for the Kreischberg valley station and takes about four and a half hours in all, so a car is easier.
Winter is the reason to come, with the gondola and the snowpark; check lift opening dates with the resort before booking. Summers around Murau are described as short, refreshing and wet. Murau holds Samson parades on 15 August, and Sankt Georgen has a carnival race every second Rosenmontag.
Yes. Snowpark Kreischberg opened in December 2015 for snowboarders and freeskiers, and the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships were held at Kreischberg and nearby Lachtal.
About 40 km of slopes including the adjoining Rosenkranzhöhe. The Kreischberg rises to 1,981 metres, and its 10-seater gondola was described as the first of its kind in Styria when it arrived in December 2013.
Yes, from Graz. Take a train from Graz main station to Unzmarkt, then a second to Kreischberg Talstation. Counted from the airport that adds up to around four and a half hours, so a car saves a lot of time.
Sankt Georgen if you want the lifts and a sauna home in a tight cluster. Murau is the town, with about 3,600 residents, a castle, a Gothic church and a brewing tradition, but far fewer of our homes.
For a quiet rural stay, yes. Summers around Murau are described as short, refreshing and wet, so pack for rain. Murau holds Samson parades on 15 August, and the Shakespeare in Styria festival now plays at Saint Lambert's Abbey.
