Sankt Michael im Lungau suits skiers heading for Speiereck and Katschberg, and cyclists on the Mur path. It is a market town beside a motorway exit, so evenings are quiet.
Sankt Michael is a market town at 1,075 metres in the upper Mur valley, just north of the Katschberg Pass and the Carinthian border. The Tauern motorway has an exit here with a large toll booth, so this is a through route rather than a dead-end valley. Winter revolves around the Speiereck and Katschberg ski area. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres around the village. They are mostly mid-sized, few sleep more than eight, and some have a sauna or a garden. Summer brings the Mur cycle path, rafting, canyoning, paragliding and a 27-hole golf course. There is little nightlife; the Advent market and the annual Samson parades are the town's set pieces.
South on the B99, the road climbs over the pass on the Carinthian border and runs on towards Spittal an der Drau.
The district capital, down the Mur valley to the east on the B96 road.
Further east along the same B96 road, which runs down the Mur valley through Tamsweg.
The city, which has an airport, is about an hour and ten minutes away by car up the Tauern motorway.
Fly to Salzburg, about 66 miles away, roughly an hour and ten minutes by car on the A10 Tauern motorway, which has an exit at the village. A bus to Salzburg also runs, but only about every three hours, so a car is the practical choice for reaching the ski area and neighbouring villages.
Winter is the main season, with the Speiereck and Katschberg ski area, then the Advent market before Christmas. Summer is for the Mur cycle path, walks from one mountain lake to the next, golf and river sports. The village sits at 1,075 metres, so check snow reports before booking a ski week, and check opening times for lifts and restaurants between seasons.

Yes. The Mur cycle path leads straight into the village, so you can ride from the door without loading bikes onto a car.
