Bodensdorf is a small Ossiacher See village for lake holidays, with the Gerlitzen ski area above. Much of the shore belongs to hotels, so only two public lidos are open to everyone.
Bodensdorf is a small, walkable village on the Ossiacher See, on the B 94 between Villach and Feldkirchen. The lake is 11 km long and the village has two public lidos, plus a sailing and surf school that also teaches kayaking, with waterskiing on offer too. The remaining lidos are kept for hotel guests, and swimming is not allowed in the lakeside Kurpark. Behind the village a toll road climbs the Gerlitzen. The homes stand close together in and around the village. They are mostly small, sleeping around five, with a sauna and a garden in over half and a private pool in few.
On the south shore, with Stift Ossiach, a former Benedictine monastery that now houses the Carinthian Summer festival.
Village with the Kanzelbahn lift to the Gerlitzen and the Seepark, which stages night water-ski shows every week.
Neighbouring lakeside municipality on the east side of the lake, home to the Domenig Steinhaus, a draw for architecture fans.
The mountain above the lake, with a ski area in winter, a summer cable car and paragliding flights down over the water.
Bodensdorf lies on the B 94 between Villach and Feldkirchen, and trains between those towns stop in the village. Buses also serve it, but check that yours runs via Annenheim, because others use the opposite shore. A car helps for the Gerlitzen toll road and the wider lake.
Summer is lake season, with the lidos and the sailing school busy and rowing and electric boats for hire. The lake hardly ever freezes because winters here are mild, and a free ski bus stops in the village for the Gerlitzen. In heavy snow the mountain road is only advisable with chains.
Yes, two public lidos are open to everyone. The other lidos along the village shore are kept for hotel guests, and swimming is banned in the Kurpark beside the lake.
Not from the door. A toll road climbs from the village to the Gerlitzen ski area, a free ski bus stops in Bodensdorf, and the Kanzelbahn lift starts in nearby Annenheim.
Mostly, since the village is small enough to cover on foot and a little tourist train runs round it in summer. Trains between Villach and Feldkirchen stop here too.
Take a Villach or Feldkirchen bus marked as running via Annenheim. Other buses on that route use the opposite shore of the lake, so ask the driver if unsure.
