Bad Kleinkirchheim suits skiers and hill walkers who want a high Carinthian valley village with two thermal spas. Most homes are small, for around four, and none has a pool, so lake swimming means leaving the village.
Bad Kleinkirchheim is a spa village of fewer than 2,000 residents in a glacial trough valley of the Gurktal Alps, between the Millstätter See and the upper Gurk river. The populated part of the valley runs from about 980 to 1,380 metres. Our homes are spread over a few kilometres of that valley rather than gathered in one centre, so check how far each one is from the lifts and the shops. Most sleep around four, many have a garden and a minority have a sauna. The Carinthian tourist board lists 103 km of pistes and 25 lifts, plus the Thermal Römerbad and Therme St. Kathrein for after skiing. The ridges above are the Nock Mountains, rounded and grass-covered. The village took the Bad in its name in 1973, after its hot spring.
Part of the old national park lies inside the municipality; the grass-covered domes were protected in 1987 and joined a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2012.
A scenic mountain road through the Nock Mountains, built from 1979, for slow drives over the high grass ridges.
Over 12 kilometres long and up to 142 metres deep, with Millstatt on its northern shore; the water can reach 25 degrees in summer.

Klagenfurt is the closest airport with a London link, where Ryanair lists Stansted, and the drive to Bad Kleinkirchheim takes around 50 minutes. By public transport it takes nearly four hours with a bus, a Railjet train and another bus, so most visitors hire a car.
Winter is the main season, with 103 km of pistes, and the resort often hosts Alpine Skiing World Cup races. In summer the Nock Mountains are for walking, and the Millstätter See can warm to 25 degrees. Spring and late autumn are the uncertain months, when lifts and some businesses may be shut, so check before you book.
Yes. Carinthia's tourist board lists 103 km of pistes and 25 lifts, and the Alpine Skiing World Cup is held there often. Homes are spread along the valley, so choose one with the lift access you want.
Not in the village itself. The valley lies between the Millstätter See and the upper Gurk river, so swimming means a drive. The village does have two thermal spas, the Thermal Römerbad and Therme St. Kathrein.
Only slowly. From Klagenfurt airport the route is a bus to the main station, a Railjet to Villach and a bus towards Radenthein, about 3 hours 50 minutes, so a hire car is far simpler.
Bad means spa. The village was granted the prefix in 1973 for its popular hot spring, and bathing guests are recorded from the 17th century. Kleinkirchheim distinguishes it from Grosskirchheim in the Möll Valley.
Small. About 1,700 people lived in the municipality in 2018, across 74 square kilometres of valley and mountain. Expect a village, not a town, with homes dotted along the road rather than clustered.
