Peak summer is peak season for good reason. The weather is reliably warm across the Mediterranean, the sea reaches its most swimmable temperatures, and children are off school for weeks at a time. It's the busiest booking period we see, and for families in particular, the demand is fierce.
Where to Go in Summer
Mallorca remains one of the most consistently popular destinations for summer villa holidays. Palma has genuine culture, great restaurants like Marc Fosh and Bens d'Avall, and the island's north-east coast around Pollença and Alcúdia offers some of the most stunning scenery in the Balearics. Transfers from Palma Airport take around 45 minutes to the north of the island.
For those who want something beyond Europe, Bali in July and August — the dry season — delivers. A private villa in Canggu or Seminyak with its own pool, a dedicated housekeeper, and daily breakfast is a genuinely different kind of holiday. The surf is excellent, the food scene is world-class, and the flight from London is around 14 to 15 hours, usually via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
Families planning a summer villa need to book early. Very early. The best villas in Greece, Croatia, and Italy for school summer holidays are often gone by January. Autumn (September to November): The Smart Traveller's Season
September is the month that most experienced villa guests swear by. The summer crowds thin out around the 10th of the month when European school holidays end. But the sea is still warm — often warmer than it was in June. The restaurants have recovered their form. And the villa prices drop.
Sardinia in September is exceptional. The Costa Smeralda is busy but manageable, the water is a deep, clear turquoise, and the island has a slightly more local feel than it does at the height of summer. A villa near Baia Sardinia or Porto Cervo gives you access to some of Italy's best coastal scenery without the frantic pace of August.
October is the month for the Algarve again. The Portuguese coast holds warmth late into the autumn, and an October villa holiday here — particularly for couples or active adult groups — is one of the most relaxed, genuinely pleasurable things you can do. For those who want Christmas with a European flavour, the Umbrian and Tuscan countryside in December has a particular magic. Truffle season runs through December. The markets in Siena and Florence are genuinely good. And a beautifully restored villa with underfloor heating, a roaring fire, and a private chef laying on a Christmas feast is, frankly, one of the finest ways to see out the year.
Warm Winter Destinations
If you're determined to see actual sunshine in January, the options are excellent. Barbados between December and April is the island's dry season — reliable sunshine, warm seas, and the kind of easygoing luxury that the Caribbean does better than almost anywhere. A beachfront villa on the west coast, sometimes called the Platinum Coast, puts you within walking distance of The Cliff restaurant and Sandy Lane beach. British Airways flies direct from Gatwick in around nine hours.
Marrakech in January and February is an unexpected but rewarding winter villa choice. The riads and private villa estates in the Palmeraie offer a very different kind of luxury — walled gardens, mosaic-tiled pools, and the extraordinary sensory experience of the city all within a short drive. It's cold at night, genuinely, but the days are crisp and sunny, and the crowds are a fraction of what they are in spring.
Sri Lanka between December and March is another strong winter option. The south-west coast — Galle, Tangalle, Mirissa — is in full dry season, and the villa quality here has improved significantly over the past five years. Families particularly love the combination of culture, beaches, wildlife safaris, and having a private pool to return to each evening.
Special Occasions: Matching the Moment to the Destination
The occasion shapes everything. A honeymoon calls for seclusion, a certain kind of romance, probably somewhere with a private terrace and a plunge pool that catches the evening light. The Luberon, the Lot Valley, and the Dordogne all have an abundance of spacious farmhouses and chateaux that comfortably host 20 or more guests, with the kind of outdoor space — big lawns, long terraces, serious pool areas — that makes spending a week together feel joyful rather than chaotic.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
For peak summer weeks — July and August — the honest answer is as early as possible. Twelve months ahead is not unusual for the very best villas in Greece, Italy, and Croatia. If you're hoping to book a specific week in late July with a large group, and you're starting that conversation in April, you'll find options but you'll need to be flexible on location.
For shoulder season and winter, you'll generally have more breathing room. Three to six months is workable. But Christmas week, like August, books early. The best large country house villas in the UK and Europe for Christmas and New Year are often reserved by February or March.
The other thing worth knowing: many villa owners offer early-booking discounts of between five and ten percent if you commit and pay a deposit well in advance. It's worth asking.
