Lohn suits walkers, cyclists and anyone after real quiet in a tiny village at 1,585 metres on the Schamserberg. The PostBus links it to Zillis, whose church has a painted ceiling of 153 panels. Only around 45 people live here, evenings are silent, and not every home has wifi.
Lohn is a village on the Schamserberg, on a terrace on the east slope of Piz Beverin, and it was once the highest municipality in the Schams. Since 2021 it has been part of Muntogna da Schons, with Mathon, Casti-Wergenstein and Donat. The landmark is the reformed church with two towers, the first probably 12th-century and the bell tower added around 1500. The homes are spread across Lohn and the neighbouring terrace villages, mostly sleeping about six. Romansh in its Sutselvisch form is still spoken by a slim majority. Evenings are very quiet, and the PostBus line to Zillis is the link down to the valley.
St. Martin's Church holds 153 painted wooden ceiling panels from around 1100, with a visiting season from May to October.
Village in the Schams valley on the Hinterrhein, with a mineral bath and the ruins of Bärenburg castle.
A 25 km circular bike tour from Zillis through Donat, Lohn, Mathon, Wergenstein and Andeer, linking the terrace churches.
Lohn lies 13 km south of Thusis. Drivers coming from the north leave the A13 San Bernardino route at the Zillis exit, while the PostBus runs from Zillis to Lohn and Wergenstein. A car makes the terrace villages far easier to explore.
The Zillis church has its visiting season from May to October, the natural window for a stay built around sightseeing and walking. The Schamserberg bike loop is listed for every month, but check whether it is open before setting off. In winter, come prepared for mountain roads.

The big sight is St. Martin's Church in Zillis, with a painted ceiling of 153 panels from around 1100 known as the Sixtina of the Alps. Lohn's own two-towered church is on the same cycling loop.
