Intragna suits walkers and couples who want a stone village in the Centovalli, with Ticino's tallest bell tower and a train to Locarno. Most homes are small, though a few take bigger groups. They are spread around the valley rather than in the village square, so plan on some driving.
Intragna is the seat of the Centovalli municipality, in the valley carved by the Melezza river; the municipality's western edge is the Italian border. Its old core is a knot of houses around a square with a fountain, overlooked by a 65 m bell tower, the tallest in Ticino, which you can climb by 166 granite steps. Since 2009 the municipality has joined 19 villages and hamlets. A Roman bridge crosses the Melezza, and a path climbs from Intragna to Pila and Costa on the terraces above. The homes are spread around Intragna and nearby hamlets, and about half have a private pool; check each listing.

Centovalli village further up the valley, with cable cars up to Rasa and Monte Comino.

The town at the end of the Centovalli railway, an easy train ride from Intragna.
Fly to Milan Malpensa or Zurich. From Malpensa, the train journey to Intragna takes around three hours via Locarno, where you join the Centovalli line. A car helps with homes outside the village, but the railway gives a car-free option.
Yes. The 65 m tower in the village centre, the tallest in Ticino, has 166 granite steps up to a 360-degree viewpoint.
Take the Centovalli train from Locarno, on the line to Domodossola completed in 1923. From Milan Malpensa airport the rail journey takes about three hours in all.
The Regional Museum of the Centovalli and Pedemonte covers valley history, including the boys who were sent from here to work as chimney sweeps in big European cities.
You can. A hiking path leads from Intragna up to Pila and on to Costa, and Pila is a cluster of old houses and renovated rustici on a sunny green terrace overlooking the village.
