Gerra suits couples who want a small lakeside village on the Gambarogno shore of Lake Maggiore, with a free public lido on the water. Homes are compact, mostly one bedroom, and none sleeps more than six. Outside the lido season evenings are very quiet, and a car widens the choice of dinners.
Gerra is a lakeside village of around three hundred people on the Gambarogno shore of Lake Maggiore. In the 18th century it spread onto the delta of the Gerra river, and since 2010 it has been part of the municipality of Gambarogno. It has three small cores, Ronco, Riva and Scimiana; Scimiana has barely changed, with narrow streets and typical Gambarogno alleys. The parish church of St. Rochus and Sebastian dates from 1744. Our homes are close together in and around the village. In summer, life centres on the public lido, where the snack bar serves into the evening. Out of season the lido closes and the village goes very quiet.
Gambarogno village with an almost intact old centre, a labyrinth of narrow passageways, and house fronts painted in 1970.
The city is about 36 minutes away by car, or around an hour by train and bus with a change at Cadenazzo.
Fly to Milan Malpensa and drive, or travel via Lugano: from there Gerra is about 36 minutes by car, or around an hour by Re80 train to Cadenazzo and then the 350 bus. A car helps for shopping and dinners in other villages.
The lido opens in May and runs through the summer, with breakfast, lunch and sunset drinks by the water. Outside the season Gerra is very quiet; in winter, nearby Vira puts on its Christmas crib exhibition.
It has a public lido on the lake covering 4,000 square metres, with a raft, a wide swimming area, toilets, parking and free entry. In season it opens daily from 8:30am to 10:30pm, and a snack bar serves meals.
Small and largely intact. Gerra is made up of three cores, Ronco, Riva and Scimiana, and Scimiana has hardly changed, keeping its narrow streets and Gambarogno-style alleys. The parish church of St. Rochus and Sebastian was built in 1744.
Reasonably. Lugano is about 36 minutes by car, or roughly an hour by train to Cadenazzo and then the 350 bus to Gerra.
Very. Only around three hundred people lived in the village in 2009, and outside the lido season there is little going on beyond the old lanes of Scimiana and the lake itself.
