Arosa suits skiers and walkers who want a small apartment at the top of the Schanfigg valley, linked by cable car to Lenzerheide. Most homes sleep about four and have one bedroom. The trade-off is the approach: the 31 km road from Chur is steep with hairpins, and the train takes just over an hour.
Arosa is a resort village spread around two small lakes, the Untersee and the Obersee, with the station at about 1,775 metres. It began as a health resort in 1883, built its first ski lifts in 1938 and opened the Weisshorn cable car in 1956. Nearly every home we list is within about a kilometre of the centre, mostly small apartments, some with a sauna. The local slopes cover over 60 km, and the Urdenbahn, built in 2013 from the Hörnli ridge, joins them to Lenzerheide. In summer there is a water organ show on the Obersee, and the Arosa Bärenland, opened in 2018 as Switzerland's first bear sanctuary. Numbers drop sharply after winter: the population falls from about 4,600 in January to about 2,500 in May.
Reached by the Urdenbahn cable car from the Arosa Hörnli; together the two form a 225 km ski area with 43 lifts.
Graubünden's capital and reputedly the oldest town in Switzerland, with a medieval old town and the main Rhaetian Railway station.
One of the few regular stops on the Chur to Arosa line, beside the Langwies viaduct, one of the railway's largest structures.
Zurich is the nearest airport; trains from Zurich take about three hours, changing at Chur. The Rhaetian Railway line up from Chur runs about hourly and takes just over an hour. Driving, allow at least an hour for the 31 km from Chur, so the train is the easier choice in icy weather.
Winter is the main season, and the village is at its fullest in January. Summer is a walking and mountain biking season, with the Schanfigger Höhenweg and the tame squirrels on the Tschuggen path; overnight guests have ridden the Arosa lifts free in summer since 2003. The Arosa ClassicCar hill race runs each September. May is the quietest month, when the population roughly halves.
Yes. The Bärenland bear sanctuary, the Obersee water organ and the squirrels on the Tschuggen path all appeal to children. Homes are mostly one-bedroom apartments, so a family of five or more has fewer choices.
No. Arosa is the end of a Rhaetian Railway branch from Chur, with about one train an hour taking just over an hour. The 31 km road from Chur is steep with hairpins and best avoided in icy weather.
Yes. Arosa has over 60 km of its own slopes, and since 2013 a cable car links it to Lenzerheide for 225 km in total. The shared area's highest point is the Parpaner Rothorn at 2,865 metres.
Walking and mountain biking, with free summer lift use for overnight guests. There is the Arosa Bärenland bear sanctuary, the water organ on the Obersee, the Schanfigger Höhenweg trail and the ClassicCar race in September.
Arosa sits at the end of its own valley road and railway, around two lakes. Lenzerheide lies in the broad valley between Chur and Tiefencastel. One lift pass covers both, so the choice is about which base you prefer.
