Salavaux suits couples who want a long sandy lake beach at the southern end of Lake Murten, in the Vully wine area. The homes are small, mostly for two to four. It is a lakeside village rather than a town, so for an old town and more choice in the evening you go to Murten, about ten minutes by car.
Salavaux is a lakeside village on the northern edge of the Broye plain, at the southern end of Lake Murten in the canton of Vaud. Since 2011 it has been part of the municipality of Vully-les-Lacs. Its sandy beach, Plage Salavaux, runs for more than 800 metres and is why the village is a popular holiday spot. Mont Vully, rising to 653 metres between Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel, carries around 150 hectares of vines growing Chasselas and Pinot Noir among others, and the Vully appellation is the only one covering two cantons. The homes are grouped together in one spot, mostly small and sleeping two to four.
The walled old town is about ten minutes away by car, and scheduled boats run from Murten to Praz and Môtier on the Vully shore.
A 5 km wine trail from Sugiez through Praz to Môtier, with information boards on growing vines in the Vully.
The BirdLife nature centre on Lake Neuchâtel, reached by boat through the Broye Canal, with four hides for watching birds.
Around 200 metres of tunnels dug into the sandstone by the Swiss Army in the First World War, freely accessible if you bring a torch.
Trains run to Avenches, where PostAuto bus 535 continues to Salavaux; from Murten, the train and bus trip takes a little over an hour against about ten minutes by car. A car makes the Vully villages far easier, and a 28 km cycle route runs right round Lake Murten.
Yes. Plage Salavaux is a sandy beach more than 800 metres long at the southern end of Lake Murten, and it is the main reason the village is a popular holiday spot.
Vully wine. Roughly 150 hectares of vineyards on Mont Vully grow Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Traminer and Freiburger, and the appellation is the only one that covers two cantons. A 5 km wine trail links Sugiez, Praz and Môtier.
Best for couples or a small family. The homes are mostly small, sleeping two to four, though the long sandy beach at Plage Salavaux is easy going with younger children.
Pick Salavaux if a sandy beach matters most, and Murten if you want to walk the old town walls and catch boats across the lake to the Vully villages. The two are about ten minutes apart by car.
