Marnand suits couples after a quiet farming village on the Broye in canton Vaud, between Payerne and Lucens. The homes are small, mostly for one or two, and grouped at one spot. Evenings are very quiet: this is a village of fields and tobacco, not restaurants.
Marnand is a small farming village on the right bank of the Broye, where the Rioz stream joins the river, between Payerne and Lucens. It had 145 residents in 2000 and since 2011 has belonged to the merged municipality of Valbroye. Main road 1 runs through it, and from 1818 until the Broye railway opened in 1876 it was a coaching stop on the road to Bern, keeping up to 120 horses. The 17th-century château probably stands on the site of a medieval fortress. Around the village the country is open: about two thirds of Valbroye is farmland and a quarter forest, and tobacco is still grown here. The homes are grouped at one spot in the village.

Fly to Geneva. From the city, the drive to Granges-près-Marnand, across the river from Marnand, takes around an hour and 20 minutes, or about two hours by train with a change at Lausanne. From Zurich the drive is around two hours. A car helps for anything away from the railway.
Yes. Granges-Marnand station, in the same municipality of Valbroye, is on the Palézieux to Lyss line, with RER Vaud trains to Payerne and on towards Murten. By rail it lies about 50 km from Lausanne.
Only for a small family. Most homes here sleep one or two, and the largest take up to five. The village is quiet farmland with little laid on for children, so plan on driving or taking the train out for days away.
A 17th-century house, probably built on the site of a medieval fortress. It became a girls' boarding school around 1890, and a philanthropic society has used it since 1939, so check access before expecting to go inside.
Allow around an hour and 20 minutes by car from Geneva to Granges-près-Marnand, the village facing Marnand over the river. The train takes about two hours, changing at Lausanne.
