Brienzwiler suits couples and young families who want a quiet heritage village beside the Ballenberg open-air museum, near Lake Brienz. It sits at about 680 m, with trains on the Interlaken to Meiringen line. Homes are small, and the station is 1.5 km from the village.
Brienzwiler is a small village of fewer than 500 people in the Aare valley, which once earned some income from travellers crossing the Brünig Pass. The whole village is in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites, and it was first recorded in 1347 as Wiler am Brünig. Wood carving still matters here alongside tourism and the Ballenberg museum, which it shares with Hofstetten. The homes sit together in the village itself. For restaurants, shops and the lake you head to Brienz, linked by a twice-hourly postbus.
The Swiss Open-Air Museum, with over 100 historic buildings moved from across the country and plenty of farmyard animals, spread over 66 hectares.
The lakeside village at the east end of Lake Brienz, known for Brunngasse, its cobbled main lane, and the Swiss Woodcarving Museum.
A historic steam cog railway runs up from Brienz between June and October, and the summit view takes in hundreds of peaks.
Reached by boat from Brienz and a nostalgic funicular, with a trail that passes behind the falling water at one point.
Fly to Zurich: the drive to Brienz takes around an hour and a half. By train, change at Lucerne for the Brünig line; Brienzwiler station has an hourly Regio between Interlaken and Meiringen, and a twice-hourly postbus runs from Brienz. You can manage without a car.
Right next door. The Ballenberg open-air museum lies partly within Brienzwiler's boundaries and partly in Hofstetten, so families can make several short visits rather than one long day.
Rarely. Glacier particles give the lake its colour, and even in summer only the most daring go in. Boat trips, kayaking and the paddle steamer Lötschberg are the better ways to enjoy it.
Yes. Brienzwiler station on the Brünig line has an hourly Regio between Interlaken and Meiringen, about 1.5 km from the village, and a postbus runs twice an hour from Brienz.
