Villas in Härjedalen

It depends on the group. Funäsdalsfjällen, around Tännäskröket and Tänndalen, has the largest lift pass and the most cross-country trails. Vemdalen has wide runs across three linked areas. Lofsdalen is smaller and quieter, which suits families with young children.

Yes. Funäsdalsfjällen has hundreds of kilometres of prepared trails linking villages and fells, and Vemdalen and Lofsdalen have their own networks. Late winter, with longer days and settled snow, is the best time.

Usually from late November or early December to late April. Snow is most reliable from February. The Swedish sports holidays in February and early March, and Easter, are the busiest weeks, so book early for those dates.

Quiet. People come for fell walking, fishing, mountain biking and paddling on the lakes, and cabins cost much less than in ski season. Mosquitoes are heavy in July, so bring repellent.

Fly to Oslo and connect to Röros for the Funäsdalen area, or fly to Stockholm and on to Östersund for Vemdalen and Lofsdalen. Either way, plan on most of a day and hire a car at the airport.

Sometimes, on clear, dark winter nights, but this is well south of Lapland and sightings are less frequent. Walk away from village lights and check the aurora forecast. Treat them as a bonus rather than the reason to book.

Härjedalen is a historic province in its own right, but today it is a municipality within Jämtland County. Östersund is the county town and the usual Swedish airport for the area.
