About Almuñécar
Almuñécar is a town first and a resort second. The Castle of San Miguel, built by the Muslims, stands above an old quarter of cobbled streets, whitewashed façades and flower-filled courtyards, and there are Roman baths and an aqueduct on the outskirts. The beaches are not golden: Puerta del Mar is grey sand and some pebbles, and Velilla is grey sand and pebbles with a promenade of restaurants. San Cristóbal is the best known, about a kilometre long, with lifeguards and sunbed hire. Our homes are spread around the town over several kilometres, and most have a pool. Puerta del Mar is known for its nightlife.
Is Almuñécar right for you?

Getting to Almuñécar
Málaga airport is the usual arrival point, around 1 hour 10 minutes by car. A direct ALSA bus also runs from the airport, taking about 1 hour 45 minutes, but only a couple of times a day. Homes are spread out, so a hire car is far easier.
When to go to Almuñécar
Almuñécar is a town with a historic quarter, not a purpose-built resort. Summer brings large holiday developments and busy beaches, and Puerta del Mar's nightlife. Outside summer the castle, old town and Roman sites are easier to see, and the Sierra Nevada ski station nearby operates through the snow season.

Is the beach in Almuñécar sand or pebble?
Grey sand with pebbles. Puerta del Mar is grey sand and some pebbles, Velilla is grey sand and pebbles, and Cotobro is dark sand and pebbles. Expect shingle underfoot rather than golden sand.
Which is the best beach in Almuñécar for children?
Calabajío is the one with shallow water suited to children. San Cristóbal is the town's best known beach, about a kilometre long, with lifeguards, showers, sunbed hire and pedalos.
Almuñécar or La Herradura for a villa stay?
Almuñécar is a full town with an old quarter, castle and restaurants behind its beaches. La Herradura is a separate bay to the west that suits diving.
Is Almuñécar worth visiting for history?
Yes. There is the Muslim-built Castle of San Miguel, Roman baths and an aqueduct, the Cueva de Siete Palacios under Roman vaults, and older Phoenician remains including a necropolis.
How long does it take to get to Almuñécar from Málaga airport?
About 1 hour 10 minutes by car, over roughly 84 km. There is also a direct ALSA bus that takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, running only a couple of times a day.
