Luz suits couples and small families who want the quiet south coast of Graciosa, near the warm Carapacho sea pools. Choice is very small. Graciosa is about 10 km long and needs an extra flight or ferry from another island, so arriving takes planning.
Luz is a parish of under 700 people on the southern coast of Graciosa, the northernmost island of the Azores' central group, and locals simply call it Sul. It takes in Folga, Pedras Brancas, Alto do Sul and Carapacho, its southernmost community, where a modern thermal spa looks over the sea and you can swim in seawater heated by thermal water. Earthquakes hit this coast in 1730, 1837 and 1980. Our homes are close together, sleep four to six, and most have a garden.
A cave reached through a tower with a 183-step spiral staircase, holding a cold water lake and a mud fumarole.
The island's main town on the east coast, known for its typical houses and narrow cobbled streets.
On a shallow bay in the south-east, with a fishing port and the Church of São Mateus, whose pipe organ dates to 1793.
Graciosa Airport is on the north coast, and SATA Air Açores flies there daily, normally from Terceira. Atlanticoline runs a daily ferry service too. A car makes the island's sights easier to reach.
Yes, at Carapacho, the parish's southernmost community. You can swim there in seawater heated by thermal water, and a modern thermal spa overlooks the ocean.
Fly to Terceira, then take the SATA Air Açores flight to Graciosa, which normally runs daily. The daily Atlanticoline ferry is the alternative. Luz is on the south coast, the airport on the north.
Graciosa is one of the driest Azores islands, mild to warm all year. November and December are the wettest months, and July is the driest.
