Świnoujście suits couples and small families who want a wide beach, a tall lighthouse and a coastal promenade that continues into Germany. Most homes are one-bedroom apartments for around four, and pools are rare. The catch is that the town is split across islands, with ferries and a tunnel linking its two sides, and no airport of its own.
Świnoujście is a port city of about 39,000 people, spread across three inhabited islands, with its two main parts on Usedom and Wolin. Regular ferries cross the Świna, and the tunnel between Wolin and Usedom, opened in 2023, is the only fixed link between the city's two halves. The beach is about 200 m wide at its broadest, which makes it the widest in Poland, and a 12 km promenade runs west to the German resort of Ahlbeck. The Świnoujście Lighthouse, built in 1857 and 68 m tall, is the highest in Poland. The Angel's Fort was built between 1845 and 1858, and the Eastern Fort houses the Coastal Defence Museum. Our homes lie within a couple of kilometres of each other. For evenings there are jazz bars, rock clubs and pubs, plus beach bars and a dance club on the sand, with nightlife busiest in summer.
About 20 minutes by road. Base of Wolin National Park, with sea cliffs at Gosań and Kawcza Góra and a bison sanctuary.
Across the German border along the promenade. The Imperial Spa resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin form a single town.
Świnoujście served as its outer port. Szczecin-Goleniów airport has Ryanair flights from Stansted and is about 50 minutes away by road.
Świnoujście has no airport. Szczecin-Goleniów, the nearest with year-round flights, is about 50 minutes by road, with Ryanair from London Stansted taking around 1 hour 55 minutes. Heringsdorf in Germany is nearer but only has summer links to German cities. Berlin Brandenburg is about three hours by road. A car helps for Wolin and Usedom.
Summer is the peak, when the beach bars fill and the nightlife is at its liveliest. Usedom averages 1,906 hours of sunshine a year, which makes it the sunniest region of both Germany and Poland. Outside summer expect the clubs and beach bars to be quieter, and note that Heringsdorf's flights are summer only. The ferry terminal has regular connections to Denmark and Sweden.
Yes. The town borders the German resort of Ahlbeck, and a street and a 12 km beach promenade link the two. So a border walk is an easy half-day, with no need to drive.
By ferry or tunnel. Regular ferries cross the Świna channel, and the tunnel between Wolin and Usedom, opened in 2023, is the only fixed link between the two parts of the city. Check which side your home is on before you book.
