Oostkapelle is a quiet family seaside resort on Walcheren, with dunes and woods behind a wide, clean beach. The beach is under 2 km from the village, and most beach pavilions close outside summer.
Oostkapelle is a village on the northwest coast of Walcheren, in the municipality of Veere. It has a small built-up centre ringed by old farmsteads. It became a seaside resort after the Second World War, and a large holiday area to the north is now about twice the size of the old village. The homes here cluster tightly. The beach is wide, with groynes and colourful beach huts, and lies a short ride from the village rather than at the door. Behind it, walking routes cross the open dunes of Oranjezon, and towards Domburg the dunes give way to conifer woods, old oaks and hawthorn. Outside summer, most beach pavilions shut and buses thin out.
A neighbouring resort, reached by walking routes through the dunes and woods between the two villages, or on bus 52.
Destroyed by bombing in 1944 and rebuilt in 1948, it has the Terramaris museum in its orangery, and its woods are mostly part of De Manteling.
Home to Fort Den Haak, now a subtropical garden with palms, banana plants, olive and citrus trees, open from April to October.
The hub for the area's buses and the end of the rail journey, with buses running on from here to Oostkapelle.
By road, the final stretch runs past Middelburg on the N57 and N277. Trains go as far as Middelburg, with a bus on from there, but buses are fewer in the evenings, on Saturdays and on Sundays, and one route runs only in the summer holidays. A car or bikes are the practical choice.
Summer is when the beach pavilions and the tourist market in the village are busy, and Zeeland gets more summer sunshine than any other Dutch province. In July and August the church tower can be climbed on Tuesdays and Fridays. Outside the season most pavilions close and buses run less often, so check opening times before a spring or autumn visit.
Yes, it is a family seaside resort with a wide, clean beach, dune walks and woods. Nearly all homes here have a garden, and most sleep around four to six, so outdoor space is easy to find.
Less than 2 km, so most people cycle or drive. The pavilions on the sand mostly open only in summer, so check what is open before an off-season beach day.
Pick Oostkapelle for a small centre surrounded by old farmsteads. Domburg is a neighbouring resort, and the walking routes and woods between the two make it easy to see both.
Head for the Terramaris museum in the orangery at Westhove castle, which is aimed especially at children. The church's 14th-century tower can be climbed in July and August.
