Bemelen is a village of a few hundred people about 5 km east of Maastricht, suited to a quiet stay with the city close by. Nearly all the homes here have a private pool. The village has little of its own, so evenings and meals mean going into Maastricht.
Bemelen sits at just over 100 metres on the eastern side of the Maas valley, along the old Roman road between Maastricht and Aachen. It was a municipality of its own until 1982, and the tower of its church has 12th-century elements. The homes are grouped tightly in the village, nearly all with a private pool, and most sleep around six, with a few much larger. This is a place to sleep, swim and set out from. The evening is in Maastricht, where the Vrijthof square is lined with pubs and restaurants. Out of season the village itself is very quiet.
The Vrijthof square, the largely Romanesque Basilica of Saint Servatius and the Sint-Pietersberg caves, about 5 km west of the village.
The German city lies roughly 30 km east of Maastricht in a straight line, further along the same Roman road.
In Belgium, about 25 km south of Maastricht in a straight line.
Maastricht Aachen Airport is about 10 km north of Maastricht, but it is mainly served by Wizz Air. Amsterdam Schiphol, Düsseldorf and Cologne Bonn are the larger alternatives. A car is the easiest way to see the area, though a bus on line 8 runs from the village to Maastricht about hourly.
Yes. Bemelen is about 5 km east of Maastricht, roughly 10 minutes by taxi, and the line 8 bus takes about 12 minutes. That makes the city centre an easy trip for dinner or a day out.
Bemelen is the quieter choice: a village of a few hundred people against a city with squares and caves. Staying in Bemelen puts you about 5 km from the centre, so nights are calm and the city is a short hop.
Nearly all of them do, and most sleep around six, with a few larger ones for bigger groups. Check each listing for the details.
Both are close. Aachen is roughly 30 km east of Maastricht in a straight line and Liège about 25 km south of it, so a day trip over either border is realistic by car.
