Playa del Carmen suits groups who want beach bars and the pedestrian Quinta Avenida in the same small town. Homes here mostly have a private pool and sleep about six, and some sleep far more. The centre gets lively late, so light sleepers should choose carefully.
Playa del Carmen is smaller and more relaxed than Cancún. Quinta Avenida is a cobbled, pedestrian-only street that runs for roughly 20 blocks, with prices higher along it than a couple of blocks away. Many bars are on the beach itself. Our homes sit in one tight cluster in the town. Most have a private pool, a garden and air conditioning, and a good share sleep eight or more. Shops and restaurants typically close around 22:00, but clubs stay open through the night.
Ferries leave from the terminal at the south end of town every hour from 08:00 to 20:00, and the crossing takes about 30 minutes.
An eco-archaeological park with an archaeological site, underground river snorkelling, a beach and a nightly show.
Many are open to the public. Cenote Chaak Tun and Rio Secreto are within a 15-minute drive and offer guided underground tours.
The archaeological site is 65 km from Playa del Carmen, around an hour by bus.
Fly to Cancún airport, about 50 minutes by car or taxi. A bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen's Terminal Turística is also possible. Once there you can walk to the beach and Quinta Avenida, but a car helps for cenotes and Tulum.
Largely, yes. The pedestrian Quinta Avenida runs for about 20 blocks, many bars sit on the beach, and our homes are in one tight cluster in town. A car only becomes useful for trips to cenotes, Xcaret or Tulum.
By ferry. Boats leave from the terminal at the south end of town every hour between 08:00 and 20:00, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. Check current times and fares before you plan the day.
Around the centre, yes. Fifth Avenue bars mostly close before midnight, but bars on 8th Street stay open until 02:00 and many clubs run through the night. Shops and restaurants usually close around 22:00.
About 50 minutes by car or taxi. Buses also run from the airport to Playa del Carmen's Terminal Turística, which is handy if you are not hiring a car.
