Radda in Chianti is a compact hilltop village circled by walls, sitting high above the valley between Florence and Siena. It's the historical capital of the Chianti League and has more going on than its size suggests — a handful of good restaurants, a weekly market, and wine shops selling Chianti Classico from surrounding estates. The village is small enough to walk in 15 minutes, which is either a limitation or a virtue depending on what you're after. We think it's one of the better Chianti bases: elevated, attractive, and less overrun than Greve.
Why Stay in Radda in Chianti
- Position: Radda sits on a ridge between the Arbia and Pesa valleys. The views in both directions are classic Chianti — vineyards, olive groves, stone farmhouses, cypress lines. The approach roads from any direction are scenic.
- Wine: The village is in the Chianti Classico DOCG zone. Several estates within 15 minutes offer tastings, and the village wine shops are knowledgeable and well-stocked. The co-operative cellar on the edge of town sells good wine at fair prices.
- Restaurants: For a village of its size, Radda eats well. A couple of restaurants serve serious Tuscan food with local wine lists. Summer terrace dining with valley views is a strong point.
- Walking: Marked trails lead from the village into the surrounding countryside. The Sentiero del Chianti passes through. The terrain is hilly but not demanding.
