Things to Do in Pienza
Walk Corso Rossellino, the main street. The cathedral has a Renaissance interior flooded with light — Pius II specified large windows, unusual for the period. The Palazzo Piccolomini (the papal palace) is open for guided tours; the hanging garden at the rear has the valley view. The Palazzo Borgia houses a small diocesan museum with Sienese paintings.
Taste pecorino at the shops along the main street. Prices and quality vary — the aged varieties wrapped in walnut leaves or hay are the most distinctive. The Fiera del Cacio (cheese rolling festival) in early September is a lively tradition.
Drive the Val d'Orcia. The SP146 road from Pienza toward San Quirico d'Orcia is one of Italy's most photographed stretches; the chapel at Vitaleta with its flanking cypresses is the classic shot. Bagno Vignoni (15 minutes) has a Renaissance thermal pool in the main square, you can't swim in it, but the thermal baths below are open.
Montalcino (20 minutes) is the home of Brunello wine. Montepulciano (15 minutes) has a larger town centre with a dramatic main square and Vino Nobile tastings. Sant'Antimo abbey (25 minutes) is a Romanesque church in an olive-grove setting where monks still chant Gregorian services.
