San Damiano d'Asti suits families and groups after Barbera country, with homes that all have a pool and many that sleep eight or more. It is a town of around eight thousand on a plateau rather than a hilltop village, so the vineyard scenery is out in the countryside.
San Damiano is a town of around eight thousand people south-west of Asti, about 40 km south-east of Turin, at 179 metres. The Astigiani built it in 1275 after destroying the old commune of Astixio, and people from the ruined villages moved up to this plateau near a river. Its landmark is the large Baroque basilica of the patron saints, Cosmas and Damian. Barbera is grown here, for Barbera d'Asti and Barbera del Monferrato, and the town holds its Festa dell'Uva each September. The homes are a short way out of town; every one has a pool and garden, nearly all have a fireplace, and many suit larger groups.
A neighbouring village whose hilltop castle, a royal Savoy residence from 1792 to 1870, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The provincial capital, a short drive north-east; its people founded San Damiano in 1275 after defeating the old commune of Astixio.
Turin airport is around an hour away by car. Public transport works but is slow, with a train to Villanova d'Asti and bus 47 taking well over two hours. With homes outside the town, a car is necessary.
September is the obvious month, with the Festa dell'Uva in town. In spring Govone stages Tulips at Court in March and April, and from mid-November until Christmas its castle hosts a Christmas market on weekends.
It is good for Barbera in particular. The vineyards around town supply Barbera d'Asti, a DOCG red, and Barbera del Monferrato, and the town celebrates the harvest with its Festa dell'Uva each September.
About 40 km. The drive from Turin airport takes roughly an hour, and public transport via Villanova d'Asti takes well over two hours.
Many are. Every home has a pool and garden, nearly all have a fireplace, and a good share sleep eight or more.
Govone castle, in the neighbouring comune, is the obvious visit: a former Savoy royal residence with Chinese wallpapers, a frescoed ballroom and an Italian garden, on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1997.
