Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is the main town of the Garfagnana, about 40 km from Lucca, with a fortress and cathedral. Homes are large and almost all have a private pool.
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana lies north of the Serchio, between the Apennines and the Apuan Alps, at about 270 m where the Serchio meets the Turrite Secca. It is called both the capital and the green heart of the Garfagnana. Its Rocca Ariostesca, named for the poet Ariosto who governed here from 1522 to 1525, holds the town hall and an archaeological museum, and the cathedral has a Della Robbia terracotta. The Garfagnana is densely wooded with heavy rainfall, and its chestnut flour has DOP status. Homes are spread around the town, tend to sleep six or more, nearly all with a private pool, and many have a fireplace.
A nature reserve with a visitor centre at San Romano, family-friendly trails and a Bear Trail of just over a kilometre.
A fortress built in the late 1500s by the House of Este, who held this part of the Garfagnana.
A medieval town in the Serchio Valley, with a Romanesque cathedral and a mid-August jazz festival.
Pisa airport is about 66 km away, roughly 1 hour 14 minutes by road. A train also runs hourly from Castelnuovo to Pisa Centrale, though not the airport. With homes spread around the hills, a car is the sensible choice.
Yes. It is a starting point for the Orecchiella Park and the Apuan Alps reserve, which have marked CAI paths, and the park has family-friendly trails including a Bear Trail where a sturdy barrier separates you from the bears.
Nearly all do. Homes here tend to be roomy, sleeping six or more, and some sleep much larger groups, so it suits families sharing a pool. Many also have a fireplace, which fits the wooded, rainy climate.
About 66 km, which takes roughly 1 hour 14 minutes by road. There is an hourly train to Pisa Centrale, but it does not run to the airport itself.
A fortress dating to the 12th century and enlarged the following century. It is named after Ludovico Ariosto, governor of the Garfagnana from 1522 to 1525, and it now houses the town hall and the Garfagnana Archaeological Museum.
