Buti suits families wanting a hill base on Monte Pisano, about 15 km east of Pisa, where most homes have a private pool. It is a working town rather than a resort, so Pisa and the sea are day trips by car.
Buti is a small town on the eastern slopes of Monte Pisano, beside the Rio Magno among pine and chestnut forest, at around 85 m. The centre has the Medici Villa, Castel Tonini, a Romanesque church of San Francesco and the horseshoe-shaped Francesco di Bartolo Theatre, built in 1842. Homes spread over a couple of kilometres of hillside, mostly sleeping about six, with a pool, a garden and a fireplace common. Olive oil and chestnuts were the traditional work, and basket-making followed in the 1800s. Forest tracks above the town suit walking and cycling, and there is no beach.
Home to the Certosa di Calci, a monumental complex built in the Baroque style.
A wellness town whose thermal baths, the Terme di San Giuliano, are known as the Bagni di Pisa.
About 15 km west of Buti, the nearest city and the home of the airport.
Pisa airport has direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, and from Manchester. Buti is about 15 km east of Pisa. The PisaMover shuttle links the airport and Pisa Centrale station in around five minutes, but a car is needed for the hill homes.
January is Buti's big date, with the Palio di Sant'Antonio, one of Tuscany's oldest palios, and restaurants serving trippa alla butese in the piazza. The wooded slopes suit walking and cycling, and the theatre runs a well-regarded theatrical season.
About 15 km east of Pisa, on the eastern slopes of Monte Pisano, and about 50 km west of Florence. The distance makes Pisa and its airport an easy day or arrival trip, though the hill homes still need a car.
A palio held every January, and one of the oldest in Tuscany. Restaurants serve trippa alla butese in the piazza during the event, a tripe dish whose recipe adds minced meat.
Yes. The pine and chestnut forests on Monte Pisano suit hiking and biking, and a protected area near the foot of the mountain shelters the Pinus laricio pine.
Olive oil is one of the town's traditional products, and the Strada dell'Olio dei Monti Pisani is a trail linking Tuscan IGP extra virgin producers. Buti also has a basket-making tradition.
