Tiarno di Sotto suits walkers and families who want a quiet village in the Ledro valley, 3.5 km from Lake Ledro. Homes typically sleep around five, and pools vary, so check each listing. The lake is a drive or bike ride away, not a stroll.
Tiarno di Sotto is a small village in the Ledro valley, one of six former comuni merged into the municipality of Ledro in 2010. The church bell tower, around 70 metres tall, is the first thing you notice. From the church square an easy hour's walk, out and back, follows the Massangla stream past the last surviving watermill to the Gorg d'Abiss waterfall, where the water has worn a hollow in the rock. Trails of different lengths and grades make it a base for walks and bike trips in the mountains. Our homes sit close together in the village. Evenings are quiet: this is a base for the outdoors, not for nightlife.
The swimming lake, 3.5 km from the village, with a beach reserved for dogs; summer is the time to swim.
The smaller lake at the western end of the valley, reached by the cycle path that runs from Biacesa.
On the lake shore, a museum of the prehistoric pile dwellings that form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site; closed December to February.
Verona airport, which serves Trentino, has flights from London Gatwick and Stansted among other UK airports. Cars reach the Ledro valley on the SS240 from Riva del Garda or from Storo. Hire a car: the lake, the trailheads and the shops are spread along the valley.
It is 3.5 km, so the lake is a short drive or bike ride rather than a stroll. Swimming in Lake Ledro is a summer activity, and one beach is reserved for dogs.
Yes, it is rated easy and suits families. The path starts by the church, covers 2.9 km there and back and takes about an hour, passing an old watermill before reaching the waterfall in the woods.
On a small scale. Cross-country skiers use the trails at Chinaech near Lenzumo, and Tremalzo offers skiing and sledging, so a winter week here suits gentle snow days rather than a big lift network.
Some do, but not most, so check each listing for a pool and a garden. Most homes have two bedrooms and sleep around five, and few take a group of eight.
