Figline Valdarno is a market town in the Arno valley, roughly 30 km southeast of Florence. It doesn't appear in many guidebooks, and that's precisely why we include it. The town has a handsome central piazza, a weekly market that draws shoppers from across the Valdarno, and easy access to both Florence and the Chianti hills without the inflated prices of either. If you want a functioning Italian town rather than a museum piece, Figline delivers.
Why Stay in Figline Valdarno
- Genuine Italian town life — this is where people live and work, not a tourist destination. The Tuesday market in Piazza Ficino is a proper local affair with food, clothes, and household goods.
- good transport links — the town sits on the Florence-Rome train line, with regular services to Florence Santa Maria Novella in about 40 minutes.
- Outlet shopping, The Mall Luxury Outlets at Leccio is just 10 minutes away, with designer brands at reduced prices. Worth knowing about if that's your thing.
- Honest caveat. Figline is a valley town, not a hilltop beauty. The outskirts have some light industrial zones and the Arno valley can be humid in high summer.
Things to Do in Figline Valdarno
The historic centre is compact and pleasant for a morning wander. Piazza Marsilio Ficino, named after the Renaissance philosopher born here, is lined with cafés and anchored by the Collegiata di Santa Maria church. The Tuesday market fills the piazza and surrounding streets with stalls.
For culture, the Museo Civico has a small collection of Renaissance art. More rewarding is a drive into the Chianti hills above town. The winding roads through Panzano, Radda, and Greve are about 30 minutes away and lined with wine estates offering tastings.
Florence is the obvious day trip. Take the train from Figline station and you're at the Duomo within an hour, door to door. Arezzo (40 minutes south by car) is another good option for its monthly antiques market and Piero della Francesca frescoes.
Families can visit the Masini riding stables nearby or cool off at one of the public swimming pools in the area during summer.
