Moena suits skiing families and groups of up to eight who want a real town where the Fassa valley begins, with Alpe Lusia about 4 km away. The lifts are a short drive rather than at the door, and none of the homes has a pool.
Moena is the largest town in the Fassa valley, at a little over 1,100 metres between the upper Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa, with the Latemar, Catinaccio, Marmolada and Cima Bocche peaks around it. Ladin is widely spoken. The centre has fountains, shops and cafés, and some of the stately houses are decorated with frescoes. San Vigilio, a church consecrated in 1164, stands above the town with a pointed bell tower, with the small church of San Volfango beside it. The local cheese, Puzzone di Moena, is on the Slow Food list. The homes are in the town itself, mostly sleeping around six, and few have a garden.

Verona airport is around two hours by car. Leave the A22 at Egna/Ora, 45 km from Moena, and follow the SS48 into the valley. Without a car, there are frequent connections from Trento and Bolzano. A car makes ski days at Alpe Lusia easier.
Moena works in every season. Winter means downhill skiing at Alpe Lusia and 18 km of cross-country trails through the woods at Alochet. Summer suits the road ride up to the San Pellegrino pass and gentle walks to Fuchiade. At dawn and dusk the peaks turn pink in the alpenglow.
Yes, if you are happy to drive to the lifts. Alpe Lusia is about 4 km away and is part of Dolomiti Superski, while Alochet adds 18 km of cross-country trails for all levels.
About two hours by car, via the A22 motorway to the Egna/Ora exit and then the SS48 into the valley. Public transport runs frequently from Trento and Bolzano, but from the airport a car is simpler.
It suits families who like easy walks. The dirt road into the Fuchiade basin is mostly flat and suitable for a trekking buggy, and the town centre has cafés and shops within walking distance.
