Badolato Marina suits couples who want long Ionian beaches below a medieval hill village, in small homes mostly for two. None has a pool, and Lamezia airport is about an hour's drive away, which is far for a short break.
Badolato is really two places. The old village stands on a spur of Mount St Nicholas at about 240 metres, a Byzantine-plan hill town with medieval lanes, the ruined walls of the Ravaschieri castle and around 14 churches for fewer than 3,000 people. In the 1980s it was put up for sale to halt depopulation, and many northern Europeans restored houses there. Badolato Marina is the coastal part, strung along the SS106 above the railway station, with very long beaches and the marina at Le Bocche di Gallipari. Most of the homes are up around the old village rather than by the beach, so check where each one sits. They are mostly small, sleeping two, and most have air conditioning.
A town on a steep hill above a large bay, with Norman castle ruins at its highest point, a rebuilt cathedral and many ceramics shops.
At Roccelletta di Borgia, about 35 km north of Badolato: a Roman theatre and amphitheatre in an olive grove, beside the ruined Santa Maria della Roccella basilica.
Coast at Stalettì where white granite cliffs meet the sea, with the Cassiodoro pools, old fish basins cut into the rock, ten minutes' drive from Scolacium.
Lamezia Terme is the nearest airport, around an hour by car to Badolato Marina and a little more up to the old village. Lamezia is also the nearest station on the high-speed line. You need a car, because the hill villages around here have little public transport.
July and August are peak season on this coast, crowded and very hot. Some hotels and restaurants close from mid-September, and by the end of the month most places have shut, so a winter stay is very quiet. April to June and September to October are the recommended months, with far fewer people about.
No. Badolato is the old hill village at about 240 metres, while Badolato Marina is its coastal part along the SS106 and the railway. Most of the homes are around the old village, so check each listing.
Yes. July and August are peak season on this stretch of Calabria, so expect crowds and book ahead. For a calmer stay, come between April and June or in September and October.
About 63 km, roughly an hour by car. The old village of Badolato is around 70 km from the airport, a drive of a little over an hour.
It is a medieval hill town of narrow lanes and around 14 churches, with views over the Ionian Sea. Houses were sold off in the 1980s to stop depopulation, and many were restored by foreign buyers.
