Zempin is Usedom's smallest Amber Spa, on the island's narrowest strip between the Baltic and the Achterwasser lagoon. For a pier and bigger resort facilities you go to Koserow or Zinnowitz. Homes here are small, mostly one bedroom.
Zempin sits on an isthmus between Zinnowitz and Koserow, where the island is at its narrowest and the Baltic beach and the Achterwasser shore are a short walk apart. Fine sand runs along the sea side, with the Küstenradwanderweg cycle route along the beach promenade. On the lagoon side there is a small sport-boat harbour, a traditional harbour area for sailing and rowing, and a 350-year-old oak at the Anglerhafen. Walks follow the Achterwasser dyke to Zinnowitz. Our homes are bunched within a kilometre or so, mostly small with one bedroom and few gardens. The railway stop is at the eastern edge of the resort, and some western accommodation is up to 2 km away. With under a thousand residents, evenings are quiet, and autumn storms wash amber onto the beach.
Largest of the four Amber Spas, with a wave-shaped sea bridge and the Streckelsberg, 58 m, the highest point on Usedom's outer coast.
Reached on foot along the Achterwasser dyke, and with a sea bridge from which boat trips run.
A nature reserve about 16 m above the Achterwasser with views to the mainland, and a lake circled by a 7 km walking path.
Boat trips from the Stagnieß harbour on the Achterwasser pass Zempin on the way.
Berlin Brandenburg has train links to Usedom, and the Usedomer Bäderbahn runs hourly from Stralsund to Świnoujście Centrum with a stop in Zempin. Heringsdorf Airport on the island has scheduled flights to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Poland. The station is at the resort's eastern edge, so a car or taxi helps.
High summer is the busy time, and traffic on the B111 can crawl, especially in bad weather. Spring brings fresh green beech forests, and orchids flower on a lakeside meadow at Kölpinsee from April to June. Autumn storms wash amber ashore, which is how the Amber Spas got their name. Check opening times for cafés and boat trips before a winter visit.
Yes, with fine sand. It forms part of the roughly 12 km Amber Beach linking Zempin with Loddin, Koserow and Ückeritz, and a promenade runs along it.
Yes. The Küstenradwanderweg runs along the beach promenade, and the Usedomer Bäderbahn carries bikes for a fee. Waymarked walks include the Alt Zempiner Weg and a longer circular route.
Zempin is the smallest of the four Amber Spas and Koserow the largest. Koserow has a wave-shaped sea bridge and the 58 m Streckelsberg, while Zempin is quieter and has a lagoon harbour.
Partly. The station is at the resort's easternmost edge, and some western accommodation is up to 2 km away, so a taxi may be needed. Trains run hourly to Świnoujście Centrum.
