Ueckermünde suits couples and young families who want calm, shallow lagoon water and a sandy town beach on the Stettiner Haff. The homes are small, mostly for two to four, and most have a garden. This is lagoon, not open sea, and Berlin's airport is over two hours away by car.
Ueckermünde is a town of about 8,600 people where the Uecker river runs into the Stettiner Haff lagoon. The old town keeps the oval line of its former wall in the street plan, with restored half-timbered and gabled houses around the Marktplatz, a ducal castle of 1546 that now holds a museum, and a Baroque church from 1766. The Haffbad, a bathing beach in use since 1926, has 800 metres of fine sand and a long shallow stretch that suits small children. There is a marina for visiting yachts. These homes sit close together, and they are compact: most have one bedroom and none sleeps more than six. South-east of town the Ueckermünder Heide forest stretches about 50 km towards the Polish town of Police.
Forest lying south-east of Ueckermünde and stretching for about 50 km towards the Polish town of Police.
About five kilometres away, the alternative for surfers while the Haff surf spot at Ueckermünde is closed from mid-May to mid-September.
Fly to Berlin Brandenburg, about two hours and ten minutes from Ueckermünde by car. By train it takes around four and a half hours with changes, the last leg on a regional train from Pasewalk to Ueckermünde Stadthafen. Once here, a car is the simplest way to reach the forest and the villages around the Haff.
Summer is beach season, when the guarded Haffbad and its shallow water come into their own. From mid-May to mid-September the surf spot at Ueckermünde is closed, so surfers head to Bellin. The Tierpark stays open all year, with shorter hours from November to February.
Yes. The Haffbad has 800 metres of fine sand, a long shallow zone and two playgrounds, and it is a guarded beach.
You can. The Haffbad has its own dog beach, alongside a separate naturist section, so dog owners have a stretch of sand set aside for them.
It is, with shorter hours. The animal park, home to about 400 animals of 100 species, opens 10am to 6pm from March to October and 10am to 3pm from November to February.
Change at Pasewalk. Regional trains run from there to Ueckermünde every two hours, and from Berlin the whole trip takes about three hours, or around four and a half from the airport.
