Loupiac works for families wanting a pool home in the north of the Lot, with Rocamadour and the Padirac chasm among the sights nearby. It is a rural farming commune on the Causse de Gramat rather than a town, so restaurants, shops and evenings out all mean a drive.
Loupiac sits roughly halfway between Brive and Cahors, in a small valley at the edge of dry causse country, and the commune is part of the Causse de Gramat, the largest and wildest of the four limestone causses of Quercy. Its nickname is the village of 55 pigeonniers, after the stone dovecotes around the commune, and there is a château too, along with old wells, bread ovens, springs and wayside crosses. Nearly half the land is woodland and much of the rest is meadow; beef cattle are the main farming. The A20 motorway and the RN20 both cross the commune. The homes are grouped together in one spot, so this is a stay built around the pool and day trips.
Chasm not far from Rocamadour where the visit, nearly 100 metres underground, continues by boat along an underground river.
Pilgrimage town built into a cliff, with the basilica of Saint-Sauveur at the top of the 216-step pilgrims' staircase and a chapel holding the Black Virgin.
Caves where an electric train carries visitors in before a guided tour through 12 underground rooms.
Dordogne river town and former port for the gabarre boats, with its 12th-century abbey of Sainte-Marie and trains on to Brive.
Brive-Souillac Airport, 13 km south of Brive, has seasonal Ryanair flights from London Stansted. Brive-la-Gaillarde is around 40 minutes from Loupiac by car. By rail, the quickest route is a taxi to Souillac and the train to Brive. You will need a car here.
Because of its dovecotes. Loupiac's nickname, joli village aux 55 pigeonniers, refers to the stone pigeon houses dotted around the commune, which also has a château, old wells, bread ovens, springs and fountains.
Yes, it is well placed for both. Rocamadour, Padirac and the caves at Lacave are among the sites close to Loupiac, which lies in the north of the Lot on the Causse de Gramat.
Fly to Brive-Souillac Airport, which has seasonal Ryanair flights from London Stansted, then drive. Brive-la-Gaillarde is around 40 minutes away by car, and the A20 motorway passes through the commune.
Mostly, for families of four to six. Most homes here have a private pool and several have a fireplace, though few sleep more than eight. Check each listing for air conditioning and outdoor space, as gardens are not standard.
