Saint-Coulomb suits couples and small families who want a big sandy beach and headland walks between Saint-Malo and Cancale. Les Chevrets is a long stretch of sand backed by dunes, with the Pointe du Meinga at its far end. Pools are rare among the homes, so check each listing; here the tides set the day.
Saint-Coulomb is a rural commune on the Côte d'Émeraude, mostly farmland inland, with around 14 km of Channel coastline. Four beaches line that shore: Les Chevrets, the Plage du Port, La Touesse and the Anse du Guesclin. Les Chevrets is the big one, a sweep of sand under the dunes, with lifeguards in summer and a beach wheelchair for visitors with reduced mobility. The Pointe du Meinga, a protected headland owned by the Conservatoire du littoral, looks out along the coast to Cap Fréhel. Inland are malouinières, the country houses of old Saint-Malo merchants. The homes are close together near the village, and evenings are low-key.
The neighbouring port town and ferry terminal; bus line 5 reaches its railway station in about 20 minutes.
A fortified islet at the east end of the Anse du Guesclin, reachable on foot at low tide but privately owned.
Protected headland with heath and seabird ledges, and a panorama running from Cap Fréhel to the Pointe du Grouin.
Brittany Ferries sails from Portsmouth to Saint-Malo once a day, so bringing your own car is straightforward. Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo airport is about 20 km away. The nearest station is Saint-Malo, around 20 minutes on bus line 5, but a car makes the beaches and headlands much easier to reach.
Summer brings lifeguards to Les Chevrets and an extra seasonal bus, but dogs are banned from that beach from 1 June to 30 September. The Côte d'Émeraude has some of the biggest tides in Europe, so beaches change hour by hour; check tide times before walking out to the islets.
Yes. Les Chevrets, the main beach, is a huge stretch of sand edged by the Chevrets dunes, running from the Île Besnard to the Pointe du Meinga. At low tide you can walk out to the Petit and Grand Chevret islets.
Not on Les Chevrets in high season. Animals are banned there from 1 June to 30 September, with exceptions only for assistance and police dogs, so plan dog walks along the headland paths in those months.
Only from the outside. The islet can be reached on foot at low tide, but it is private property. The singer Léo Ferré owned it from 1959 and lived there until 1968.
Just about. Bus lines 5 and 9 link the commune with Saint-Malo, whose station is around 20 minutes away by bus, and a BreizhGo line adds a service in summer. For the quieter beaches a car or bike helps.
