Barèges is a compact spa and ski village high in the Bastan valley, linked by lifts to La Mongie in the Grand Tourmalet area. It suits skiers and summer hikers who want to be in the village itself. There are no gardens or pools, so this is a mountain stay, not a lounging one.
Barèges sits at about 1,250 metres in the Bastan valley, on the western side of the Col du Tourmalet, and the road through the village is the D918 running west towards Lourdes and Tarbes. Fewer than 150 people live here, so it feels more like a mountain outpost than a town. Every home is within the village itself, and none has a pool, garden or fireplace. Many sleep eight or more. The village is a thermal spa known since the early 17th century, and the Caoubère and Tourmalet chairlifts tie it to La Mongie.
Linked ski resort on the east side of the Col du Tourmalet, joined to Barèges since 1973.
A high pass of 2,115 m that the Tour de France has climbed 87 times up to 2020.
A 2,877 m summit with an observatory, and an International Dark Sky Reserve.
The D918 runs west from Barèges down the valley to Lourdes, Tarbes and the airport. Tarbes-Lourdes airport is about 35 km from La Mongie, the linked resort on the far side of the pass. A car is the practical choice.
Barèges is the second oldest ski resort in France, and the linked Domaine du Tourmalet runs from about 1,400 to 2,500 metres, so winter is the main season. Walking goes on in all seasons. The Col du Tourmalet, on whose western side the village sits, had featured in the Tour de France 87 times up to 2020.
Barèges is part of the Grand Tourmalet, the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. It joins La Mongie and offers more than 100 km of pistes between roughly 1,400 and 2,500 metres.
Yes. Its sulphurous waters have been known since the early 17th century, and the spa is described as the highest in the Pyrenees. Madame de Maintenon visited in 1675 and the village takes its name from her letters.
Yes. The Domaine du Tourmalet offers hiking in all seasons as well as skiing. The Col du Tourmalet at 2,115 metres is close by too, a pass the Tour de France has climbed many times.
Barèges is an old spa village on the west side of the pass, while La Mongie is a resort village at about 1,800 metres on the east side. Both sit in the same ski area.
