Locquirec suits families and couples who want a small Brittany harbour village with a south-facing white-sand beach by the port. The Roscoff ferry port is around 40 minutes by road. Lifeguards cover the main beach only in July and August, and the village is small.
Locquirec is a commune of about 1,500 people, built around its church and its marina on the Finistère side of the Douron estuary; across the river lie Plestin-les-Grèves and the Côtes-d'Armor. Port beach sits at the centre of village life and faces south-east, which is uncommon on this northern coast. It has white sand, free parking, toilets, a bar and a restaurant. Other beaches include Pors Ar Villec, the White Sands, Moulin de la Rive and Fond de la Baie, so there is usually a sheltered one whichever way the wind blows. The coast has cliffs of up to about 50 metres. The homes are mostly larger, with three bedrooms typical, and most have a garden. Few have a pool.
About 21 kilometres from Locquirec by road, a drive of roughly 25 minutes.
Ferry port for Plymouth, about 40 minutes by road; Brittany Ferries sails there daily from February to November.
Small island reached by a launch from Roscoff harbour, for a day out away from the car.
On the opposite bank of the Douron, so just across the river and into Côtes-d'Armor.
Roscoff, where the Plymouth ferry docks after a crossing of about nine hours, is about 44 kilometres away, roughly 40 minutes by road. If you fly, Brest airport is about 53 kilometres from Roscoff by road. Morlaix is about 25 minutes from Locquirec. You will need a car, as the beaches and villages are spread along the coast.
Port beach has lifeguards only from 1 July to 31 August, so those two months are the main swimming season and the busiest on the sand. Outside them there is no lifeguard cover. The Plymouth ferry sails daily from February to November, with occasional Christmas sailings, so winter crossings are limited. Check restaurant opening times before an off-season visit.
Yes, mainly because of Port beach: white sand, facing south-east, with parking, toilets and drinking water, and a lifeguard in July and August. A bar and restaurant sit on the beach.
Port beach, by the harbour at the centre of the village, is the main one, and it faces south-east. The others are Pors Ar Villec, the White Sands, Moulin de la Rive and Fond de la Baie. On a windy day, one of them will usually be sheltered.
About 44 kilometres, which is roughly 40 minutes by road. Brittany Ferries sails from Roscoff to Plymouth daily between February and November, so a self-drive trip without flying is realistic.
Locquirec is in Finistère, on the left bank of the Douron. The river marks the boundary, so Plestin-les-Grèves, just across it, is in Côtes-d'Armor.
A few do, but most do not, so filter for a pool if it matters. The homes here are mostly sized for six to eight people, and most have a garden.
