Fréhel suits walkers and families who want the long sandy beach at Sables-d'Or-les-Pins with the cliffs of Cap Fréhel close by. Homes are small, mostly sleeping four, though a few have a pool or sauna. Beach life follows the tides, and the summer shuttle buses stop at the start of September.
Fréhel is a commune, once called Pléhérel, that takes its name from the cape and includes the resort of Sables-d'Or-les-Pins. The main beach there runs for about 3 km of fine sand and ends at a dune spit beside a marsh, which turns into a play area for children at low tide. The casino, bike hire and ice cream are a few steps from the sand. The homes are scattered around the commune rather than in one resort. Out on the cape, schist and pink sandstone cliffs rise more than 70 m from the sea, topped by around 400 hectares of gorse and heather.
Cliffs over 70 m high above heath of gorse and heather, with a bird reserve that shelters shags and a small colony of rare razorbills.
Castle reached on foot from the Cap Fréhel lighthouse in about an hour and a half; inside you can visit the chapel, guard room and keep.
Small island visible to the west from the beach at Sables-d'Or-les-Pins.
Saint-Malo is around 40 minutes' drive from Fréhel. A car is the practical choice: bus line 202 serves Sables-d'Or-les-Pins only in July and August, and the free DINAMO shuttles run from early July to 1 September.
May to October is the most colourful time on the cape: gorse and thrift flower in spring, and the heather turns purple in summer. On the main beach, dogs and horses are banned between 9 am and 9 pm from May to the end of September.
Very. The beach at Sables-d'Or-les-Pins in Fréhel runs for about 3 km of fine sand, with lifeguards, parking, showers and a first-aid post, plus a marsh behind the dune spit that children use at low tide.
Yes, it takes about an hour and a half on the coast path from the lighthouse. At the fort you can see the chapel, guard room and keep, and it has been used as a film set.
Not on the main Sables-d'Or-les-Pins beach between 1 May and 30 September from 9 am to 9 pm. Plan dog walks around those hours or take to the coast path instead.
From May to October, when the heath is at its most colourful. Gorse turns yellow and thrift pink in spring, the heather goes purple in summer, and on clear days the view reaches Jersey.
