About Kemiönsaari

Kemiönsaari, called Kimitoön in Swedish, is a municipality formed in 2009 from Dragsfjärd, Kimito and Västanfjärd, with a little over 6,000 residents and a Swedish-speaking majority. Kimito is a traditional rural village with a medieval church, museums and the big grocery stores. Dalsbruk is the most urban spot, with an ironworks museum, a marina and a jazz festival in July. Kasnäs has a spa hotel, a marina and the ferry harbour for Rosala. Our homes are spread over roughly 30 km, so choosing the right end of the island matters as much as choosing the house. Nearly all have a sauna, most sleep around five, and very few sleep more than eight.

Kimito is about 60 km from Turku, whose airport has flights to Stockholm, Gdańsk, Vilnius and Riga. Helsinki is about 155 km away via Raseborg. Buses run roughly hourly in the daytime from Turku to Kimito and Dalsbruk, with fewer to Kasnäs and Västanfjärd, so a car is needed for most homes.

When to go to Kemiönsaari

Summer is when the island works. Several museums and the Söderlångvik manor museum keep summer hours, the Eugenia sails to Örö weekly in season, and Dalsbruk holds its jazz festival in July. Some ferries and buses run only on certain days. In winter Labbnäs keeps a hole in the ice for swimming. In warm months watch for ticks, and keep children and pets out of water with algal blooms.
