Raasepori suits couples and small families after a quiet sauna cottage in mostly Swedish-speaking western Uusimaa, home to Fiskars. Every home here has a sauna and nearly all have a fireplace. Homes are scattered across a large municipality and few have wifi, so check before you book if you need to work.
Raasepori, or Raseborg in Swedish, is a coastal town in western Uusimaa formed in 2009 from Ekenäs, Karis and Pojo. Swedish is the majority language. It covers more than 2,300 square kilometres, over half of it water, yet has only about 27,000 people. Ekenäs is the administrative centre, and Karis, Fiskars and Tenala are the other main settlements. These homes are spread widely across the municipality rather than in one place, and they are on the small side, most sleeping four to six. Every one has a sauna and nearly all a fireplace, but few have wifi.
Village of under 1,000 people around an ironworks founded in 1649, now full of design workshops, shops and restaurants that stay open into winter.
Raasepori's administrative centre, reached from Helsinki by train to Tammisaari station in about an hour and a half.
Fly to Helsinki Airport, just under an hour and a half by car from Ekenäs, the main town. Trains from Helsinki reach Tammisaari station in about an hour and a half, and buses run twice a day, but with homes spread across the countryside you will need a car.
Summer is the main season, when the old ironworks village of Fiskars is at its most popular with visitors. The workshops, shops and restaurants at Fiskars keep going in winter too, so a quiet off-season week with the fire lit is a real option.
Yes. Raasepori is the Finnish name and Raseborg the Swedish one for the same town, formed in 2009 by merging Ekenäs, Karis and Pojo. Swedish is the majority language here, spoken by nearly two thirds of residents.
Yes, if you like crafts and design. The village grew around a 17th-century ironworks and its old factory area now houses designers, artisans, shops and restaurants, plus a mansion designed in 1818 by Charles Bassi.
Partly. VR trains from Helsinki run to Tammisaari station in Ekenäs in about an hour and a half, around twice a day. From there you will still need a car or taxi to reach a countryside cottage.
Mostly small. The typical home here sleeps four to six with two bedrooms, and none takes more than eight, so they suit a couple or a family better than a large group.
