Iisalmi suits families after a lakeside sauna cottage near a small brewery town in North Savo, about an hour from Kuopio Airport. Nearly all homes have a sauna and most sleep up to six. The homes are spread through the countryside, so a car matters more than the town's railway station.
Iisalmi is a town of about 20,000 in North Savo, 87 km north of Kuopio, and the home of Olvi, the last big independent Finnish brewery. The Iisalmi area has 111 lakes, among them Porovesi, Haapajärvi and Onkivesi, and town beaches for a summer swim. In town you will find the wooden Gustav Adolf Church and Kuappi, listed as the world's smallest restaurant. Olvi sponsors the Oluset music festival each July. In winter the Paloisvuori ski centre has downhill skiing and snowboarding. The homes are scattered around Iisalmi rather than in the town, so evenings tend to be spent at the cottage.
Strait a few kilometres north-east of central Iisalmi linking lakes Iso-Ii and Porovesi, where Sweden won its last battle on Finnish soil.

July is the liveliest month, with the Oluset festival, and summer is the time for the town beaches. Winter suits a quieter stay of sauna evenings and runs at Paloisvuori. Check opening hours for the brewery museum, which keeps weekday hours.
