Kuopio suits groups after a lake-city base with a sauna home nearby, Lake Kallavesi all around and Puijo tower's revolving restaurant. Most homes sit out in the countryside around the city rather than in the centre, so plan on driving for shops and the harbour.
Kuopio is the capital and largest city of North Savo, home to more than 100,000 people, and it is laid out around a maze of waterways, islands and peninsulas on Lake Kallavesi, the region's largest lake. The homes here nearly all have a sauna and a fireplace, none has a pool, and most sleep around four to eight. They are spread over the countryside around the city, so the centre is a drive away. In town, the market square is the place to eat vendace, lightly fried or smoked, or kalakukko, a rye loaf baked with fish and pork. Puijo tower has a revolving restaurant at the top and forest trails around its base. Out in the country, evenings mean the sauna and the fire, not restaurants.
Ski resort in Nilsiä, now part of Kuopio, with downhill and cross-country skiing in winter and mountain biking and golf in summer.
A gorge in Leppävirta, between Varkaus and Kuopio, with a hiking trail of roughly 7 km.
A gorge in Tuusniemi about 50 km from Kuopio, with a 2.5 km trail.
Kuopio Airport is about 17 km north of the centre, with direct flights from Helsinki, so UK visitors usually connect there. From Helsinki the drive takes about four and a half hours. A car is needed, as the homes are out in the countryside.
Summer is for lake cruises from the harbour, the Kuopio Dance Festival in June and the wine festival at the start of July. Watch for ticks and insects on forest walks. Winter brings skiing at Tahko, the Christmas market in December and long evenings in the sauna. Check opening times before visiting off season.
At the market square, which is Finland's biggest. Kalakukko is a rye loaf filled with fish and pork and baked for hours until the crust turns dark. Vendace, lightly fried or smoked, is sold there too.
Tahko is better if skiing is the plan, as it has the downhill slopes and cross-country trails. Kuopio is the better base if you also want a city with museums, a market and a harbour, and Tahko is close enough to visit.
Kuopio Airport has direct flights from Helsinki, so visitors from the UK normally connect in Helsinki. The airport is about 17 km north of the city centre, and a taxi or bus into town takes 20 to 25 minutes.
Take a lake cruise from the harbour, climb or drive up to Puijo tower for the view, and walk the forest trails around it. June brings the dance festival, and the wine festival follows at the start of July.
Mostly no. The homes are spread across the countryside around Kuopio, so the market and harbour are a drive away. Nearly all have a sauna, and most have a fireplace.
