Muonio suits skiers and hikers after a sauna cabin near the Olos and Pallas ski areas, about an hour from Kittilä Airport. Most homes sleep four to eight. Nightlife is close to nil, even at the ski resorts, so this is for outdoor days and quiet evenings.
Muonio is a small Lapland municipality of about 2,300 people on the Muonio river, which forms the border with Sweden. Roughly half live in the main village at the junction of the E8 and road 79. The Lapland War destroyed most of its buildings, but the wooden church of 1817 survived. Tourism keeps it going: Olos ski resort is a few kilometres away and Pallas sits inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, Finland's most visited. The homes are spread around the municipality rather than in the village. There is no local public transport and no real nightlife, but clear winter nights often bring the northern lights, and Muonio is known for the longest snow season in Finland.
Ski resort and visitor services inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park; the park's visitor centre is about 32 km from Muonio centre.
Ski resort by road 79, some 6 to 8 km south-east of Muonio village, with no real nightlife to speak of.
Fell rated one of Finland's most scenic spots, with a hiking trail, a campfire site and ponds for a swim.
Fishing huts, some from the 1700s, at a base used by Lake Jerisjärvi's fishermen since at least the 1500s; free to visit.
Fly to Kittilä, about 74 km away; the drive to Muonio takes about an hour, or about 1 hour 10 minutes by bus. Rovaniemi has better connections out of season, with coaches taking about three and a half hours. Hire a car, as there is no local public transport.
Winter brings skiing, Finland's longest snow season and northern lights, with polar night through most of December. The midnight sun runs from late May to mid July, when the fells, rivers and canoeing take over. Peak-season buses link Muonio with the national park.
It works well. Olos ski resort is just outside the village and Pallas has slopes inside the national park, and cross-country skiing is taken seriously here: the local college runs a top ski class. Expect no real nightlife at either resort.
Fly to Kittilä, about 74 km south-east, roughly an hour by car or 1 hour 10 minutes by bus. Rovaniemi, about 233 km away, often has much better connections outside the winter season.
Roughly from late May to mid July, when the sun stays above the horizon all night. In winter the reverse happens, with polar night from around 10 December into early January.
Realistically, yes. There is no local public transport, the homes are spread around the municipality, and the shared taxi to Olos, Pallas and Kittilä airport must be booked a day ahead.
