Vejers Strand suits families and dune-walkers who want a quiet North Sea resort with a long, wide beach on the doorstep. Most homes sleep around six and nearly all have a fireplace. The trade-off is that only about two dozen people live here, so it is a resort of holiday houses rather than a town.
Vejers Strand is a beach resort of more than 500 holiday homes on the west coast of Jutland, between Blåvand and Grærup. Only about two dozen people are registered as living here, so this is a place of summer houses, not a town. Our homes sit in a tight group, within about a kilometre of each other. The beach is long and broad, and surfers, sailors, swimmers and riders all use it. The northern stretch is car-free, while in the southern section you can drive down to the water. On a clear day the Horns Rev wind parks show on the horizon. Few homes have a pool, many have a sauna, and a fireplace is nearly universal. Vejers is known for its sweet factory.
A 39-metre lighthouse built in 1900 on Denmark's westernmost point, next along the coast from Vejers Strand.
An island of about 16 km by 3 km reached by a 12-minute ferry from Esbjerg, with thatched Sønderho and a beach you can drive on.
About 30 km away, with the Fisheries and Maritime Museum and its saltwater aquarium and seal tank, a useful wet-day option.
A 22,500-hectare nature park between Blåvands Huk and Nymindegab, with dunes, heath, coastal lakes and mudflats.
Billund is the usual airport for UK visitors, with British Airways from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick. Esbjerg Airport only has flights to Aberdeen and Stavanger. Esbjerg is about 30 km from Vejers Strand, and Varde, the nearest town, about 20 km. Plan on a car.
Lifeguards are on duty on the beach during the summer season. Vejers Strand has only about two dozen registered residents, so outside the holidays it is very quiet. Military Hercules aircraft sometimes train on the beach, which is then closed. Offshore wind farms are visible only in good visibility.
Only in the southern section. The beach is divided into a northern, car-free section and a southern one where you can drive down to the water and park near it.
There are lifeguards on duty in the summer season, and the beach has received the Bathing Point Award. The sea is the North Sea, so swim where the lifeguards are.
They are neighbours on the same coast, with Vejers Strand between Blåvand and Grærup. Blåvand has the lighthouse on Denmark's westernmost point. Vejers Strand is a smaller resort of more than 500 holiday homes.
Billund, because British Airways flies there from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick. Esbjerg Airport has only Aberdeen and Stavanger flights. Billund is 61 km from Esbjerg by road, and Vejers Strand is about 30 km from Esbjerg.
Sometimes. Military Hercules transport planes make training flights onto and from the beach, and it is closed while they do so.
You can hunt for amber on the beach, see the Blåvandshuk lighthouse, take the 12-minute ferry from Esbjerg to Fanø, or visit Esbjerg's Fisheries and Maritime Museum.
