Toftlund suits families wanting a quiet inland base in South Jutland, with Tønder's old streets and the Wadden Sea coast a drive away. The town has about 3,300 people and no sea, so every beach day is a car trip.
Toftlund is an inland town of about 3,300 in Tønder Municipality, 35 km north-east of Tønder and 30 km north-west of Aabenraa. It was a Prussian administrative centre from about 1870, and German-style buildings from that time survive. Facilities are practical: a cinema and library on Culture Square, an outdoor pool, a golf course and forest trails north of town. Our homes are not in the centre. They sit in a tight cluster roughly 8 to 9 km west-south-west of it, so expect to drive even for bread. Most are houses for around six, nearly all with a fireplace and a minority with a sauna. Evenings are your own terrace or fire, with the odd jazz or comedy night at the folk high school. Out of season it is dark and very quiet.
Old centre of late 17th and early 18th century lace-era houses, 35 km south-west, with the Tønder Festival of folk music every August.

Billund is the nearest main airport, with British Airways from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick listed, and it lies about 113 km north of Tønder, which is itself 35 km from Toftlund. A car is essential: the homes sit outside the town and the coast is a drive away. Trains reach Tønder from Esbjerg and Ribe.
In spring and autumn the sort sol, huge starling flocks, gather shortly after sunset over the marshes near Tønder and Ribe. The Tønder Festival of folk music runs every August. In summer you will be driving to the coast with everyone else. Out of season the town goes very quiet, and a fireplace week with forest walks north of town suits it best.
No. Toftlund is inland, about 35 km north-east of Tønder, so the Wadden Sea coast is a drive away. Rømø, a Wadden Sea island of 129 square kilometres, is one option, and cars can legally be driven onto its beach.
The town has an outdoor pool, a golf course, a cinema and library on Culture Square, and forest trails north of town. The folk high school hosts jazz, comedy and theatre, and the annual Toftlund Lydfest.
Tønder is bigger, with about 7,500 people, a lace-era old town and rail links to Esbjerg, Ribe and Germany. Toftlund is smaller and calmer, at about 3,300, and its station closed in 1939.
Not in the town centre. The homes sit in a tight cluster about 8 to 9 km west-south-west of Toftlund, so allow a short drive to every shop and for each outing.
