About Rømø
Rømø is a Wadden Sea island of 129 square kilometres and around 650 residents, joined to the mainland by a 9 km road causeway. Its highest dunes reach only about 19 metres. Our houses are spread across the island, with the median near its middle. Most sleep about six, a fireplace is common and some have a sauna. The west coast is one long beach, up to 6 km wide in places. At Lakolk you can drive right down to the water, and kite buggies have their own area by Sønderstrand. Havneby, the largest settlement, has the ferry to List on Sylt. Evenings are quiet and mostly spent at home. From October dogs can run free on the beach and the island is at its quietest.
Is Rømø right for you?
- Best for
- Families and dog owners wanting a huge beach and space for kites
- Not for you if
- You want shelter from the wind, because the island is low, open and faces the North Sea.

July and August are the warmest months, and Lakolk has lifeguards in summer, though the sea stays cool. The first weekend of September brings one of Europe's biggest kite festivals to the beach at Lakolk. per nightRømø villa holidays: questions answered
Is Rømø good for families?
Yes. The beach at Lakolk is wide and sandy, with shallow pools left by the receding sea and lifeguards in summer, and there is space for kites. The island is open to the wind, so pack windbreaks and warm layers.
Do you need a car on Rømø?
Yes. The island covers about 129 square kilometres, the houses are spread across it, and bus 285 runs five to seven times on weekdays and only two or three times at weekends.
Can you drive on the beach on Rømø?
Yes. At Lakolk you can drive onto the beach right down to the water. Sønderstrand has separate areas for beach sailing, kite buggies and blokarts, so follow the signs for each stretch.
Which airport for Rømø?
Billund, about an hour and a half by car, is the nearest with UK flights, including British Airways from Heathrow. Hamburg is about two and a half hours away and is the main alternative.
Can you bring a dog to Rømø?
Yes, with rules. Dogs must be on a lead on the beach from 1 April to 30 September, and in towns, dunes and plantations all year. Fenced dog parks at Lakolk, Kirkeby and Vråby plantations are open year-round.
Rømø or Blåvand for a holiday house?
Rømø has the bigger beach, cars on the sand and an island feel. Blåvand has more shops, a zoo and the Tirpitz museum close by. Choose Rømø for space and Blåvand for things to do.
