About Hvide Sande

Hvide Sande is a small town of about 2,800 people in the Holmsland Dunes, built around a canal that links Ringkøbing Fjord to the North Sea. The harbour opened in 1931 and is one of Denmark's five largest fishing ports, now also used for offshore wind work. A smokehouse and fish shop stands near the auction hall. The North Sea beach at Sydstrand is a wide stretch of fine sand with lifeguards in summer, a short walk from town, while the fjord behind it is a shallow lagoon. Our homes are spread over some 20 km of dune, and the middle of them lies to the south, nearer Nymindegab than the harbour. German, Danish, Scandinavian and Dutch visitors come for the town and the dunes.

When to go to Hvide Sande

Lifeguards are posted on Sydstrand in the summer season. Many foreign fishing boats come into the harbour in spring, mainly for sole. The beach's reliable wind draws surfers, and there is a good chance of finding amber along the shoreline. Tipperne, the bird reserve at the south of the fjord, is normally closed to visitors.
