About Højer
Højer has about a thousand residents and a skyline dominated by Højer Mill, a Dutch-style windmill from 1857 that is now a museum. Højer Dike stands where the Vidå river reaches the sea, and a pole on Søndergade marks past storms and floods. There are few places to eat: a cafeteria, a café in nearby Rudbøl and a sausage shop. Hjerpsted Beach is for walking, views and oyster gathering rather than swimming, because the bottom is thick Wadden Sea mud. Our homes are spread over about eight kilometres around the town, so expect to drive. Some have a pool or a sauna, a few are very large, and most sleep around six.
Is Højer right for you?
- Best for
- Walkers and birdwatchers wanting open marsh and big skies
- Not for you if
- You want a swimming beach or nightlife, since the local shore is mud and the town is tiny.

Højer villa holidays: questions answered
Can you swim at Højer?
Not at Hjerpsted Beach: the bottom is thick Wadden Sea mud, so it is not a bathing beach. People go there for walking, views and gathering oysters. Check where you can swim before booking a beach week.
What is Højer Mill?
A Dutch-style windmill built in 1857, described as the tallest of its kind in northern Europe. It is now a museum on the mill and local history, open from April to October.
How far is Højer from Tønder?
About 11 minutes by car. Bus line 266 runs between the two on weekdays and takes roughly 23 minutes, so a car still gives far more freedom.
Is Højer good for birdwatching?
Yes. The Wadden Sea National Park runs south to Tøndermarsken, the flat marshland on the German border, and millions of waterfowl stop on its tidal flats to feed. Keep your distance from flocks.
Which airport should you use for Højer?
Billund, about 105 km away and one hour 35 minutes by car. The public transport journey is five hours or more with several changes, so most guests drive from the airport.
