About Blåvand
Blåvand is a small resort village beside Blåvandshuk, the westernmost point of mainland Denmark, where a 39 metre lighthouse from 1900 looks out over Horns Rev and its wind farm. The houses lie within a few kilometres of the centre, nearly all have a fireplace, about half a sauna and some a private pool. The northern beach is wild, with strong currents and high waves. The southern beach is sheltered by sandbanks and has summer lifeguards and a bathing jetty. The village has a Spar supermarket, two bakeries, outdoor clothing shops and amber shops. The Tirpitz museum, opened in 2017, is cut into the dunes beside a wartime German bunker. Evenings are low-key, with a few cafés, pubs and restaurants. The lighthouse and zoo stay open all year.

Blåvand villa holidays: questions answered
Is Blåvand good for families?
Yes. The southern beach is sheltered by sandbanks, with summer lifeguards and a bathing jetty, and there is a zoo, a trampoline centre and a water park at Hvidbjerg Strand. Keep children away from the northern beach, which has strong currents.
Do you need a car in Blåvand?
Yes. The houses are spread around the village, and the beaches, the Tirpitz museum and the Fanø ferry at Esbjerg are easiest to reach by road. The small centre itself is walkable.
Which airport for Blåvand?
Billund, about 1 hour 10 minutes by car, with British Airways from Heathrow and Norwegian from Gatwick. Esbjerg is closer but has no direct UK flights. Hire a car at the airport.
Is Blåvand busy in August?
Fairly. More than 2,000 holiday homes surround a village of about 200 residents, so the population swells in summer. There are around 40 km of beaches, though, so a short walk from the access points usually finds space.
Is Blåvand or Fanø better for a holiday house?
Blåvand has more shops and attractions close by and no ferry to plan around. Fanø is an island with one long beach you can drive on and thatched lanes in Sønderho. Pick Blåvand for convenience and Fanø for an island feel.
