Løkken suits families who want a long beach of fine white sand with a small town centre and its white bathing huts right behind it. The houses are spread several kilometres north and south, so many need a car, and July is the busiest month.
Løkken is a former fishing village of under 2,000 people at the southern end of Lønstrup Klint. It turned to tourism after the Løkken Badehotel opened in 1895, and the centre now has shops, cafés, restaurants and the Bolcheriet sweet factory. The beach is fine white sand, compacted hard enough for cars on some stretches, while the central stretch is car-free. From May to September around 500 private white bathing huts stand in rows below the dunes, which is why Løkken is called the White Town. The houses are spread widely north and south, so some are walkable to the beach and others are a drive. Most sleep about six, many have a fireplace and some a sauna. Out of season the huts are gone and the beach is empty.
Old fishing village with glassblowers, potters and galleries at the far end of the cliffs, about 15 minutes' drive north.
Lighthouse on the highest part of Lønstrup Klint, between Løkken and Lønstrup, moved 70 metres inland in 2019.
Medieval abbey and former seat of the bishops of Vendsyssel a few kilometres east, now a museum with a café.
Popular beach town about 20 minutes' drive south, with summer concerts on its square and mountain bike trails in the dune plantation.
Aalborg Airport is about 35 minutes' drive away, with Norwegian flights from London Gatwick, or connect through Copenhagen. The centre of Løkken is walkable, but the houses are spread along the coast, so a car is needed for most of them and for day trips.
July is the busiest month, with the huts out, cars on the sand and the town full, so book early. June and September are calmer, and the huts stand on the beach from May to September. Lifeguards cover the beach in summer. From October the huts are gone, autumn storms hit the coast and the beach is nearly empty, which suits walkers who like wind.
Yes. The beach is fine white sand with lifeguards in summer, and the town centre has shops, cafés and a sweet factory close by. The North Sea is cold and can be rough, so keep children close in the water.
For most houses, yes. They are spread several kilometres north and south of the centre, so shopping and day trips to Blokhus, Lønstrup or Børglum Abbey are much easier by car.
On parts of it. Cars may drive on the compacted sand north towards Nørre Lyngby and south towards Blokhus, but the central stretch between Nørre Strandvej and Søndre Strandvej is car-free. Follow the signs at each access road.
Aalborg is the nearest, about 35 minutes by car. Norwegian flies there from London Gatwick, and SAS connects through Copenhagen.
Løkken has the white bathing huts and a car-free beach in front of the town. Blokhus draws around a million visitors a year and stages summer concerts on its square. Choose Løkken for a slower pace and Blokhus for more going on.
