Væggerløse homes suit families who want Marielyst's 20 km of soft white sand on Falster's Baltic coast, a short hop from the houses. Expect a car-led week, and shops and restaurants that cut their hours once summer ends.
Væggerløse is a small town of about 1,300 on Falster, roughly 8 km south of Nykøbing, with a hilltop Romanesque church and large housing estates. Travellers book here for Marielyst, the beach resort a few kilometres further south. The median house sits a little north of the resort centre, in summer-house streets, and the spread is small. Marielyst has only about 600 permanent residents but over 6,000 summer houses in and around it, so for most of the year it is far emptier than its size suggests. The beach is soft white sand running for some 20 km along the Baltic, sloping gently into calm water. The resort has hotels, restaurants, shops, a go-kart centre, a kite and windsurfing school and the Golf and Fun Park with minigolf. Homes typically sleep around six, and many have a sauna or fireplace. Out of season, opening hours shrink.
The resort itself, with restaurants, shops, a go-kart centre and the Golf and Fun Park, a few kilometres south of Væggerløse.
Bird reserve on the remains of a shallow lagoon, with three towers, hides and about 15 km of easy paths, plus Bøtø Plantage woods.
The largest town on Lolland and Falster, about 12 km north of Marielyst, with a railway station and a wooden house from 1580.
Town at Falster's southern tip, from where Scandlines car ferries cross to Rostock in Germany.
Copenhagen airport is the one to use, and Marielyst is about an hour and a half from Copenhagen by car. Local trains from Copenhagen terminate at Nykøbing Falster, but public transport from the capital takes around four hours and you will still want a car for the houses. Drivers coming through Germany can cross from Puttgarden to Rødbyhavn on Lolland.
June to September is the best time for swimming, and the beach is big enough that you can usually find space even in high season. July and August are the wettest months, though the rain is modest. In winter the days are cold and shop and restaurant hours are limited, which gives walkers the long beach to themselves and Bøtø Nor its migrating geese and whooper swans.
Not quite. Væggerløse is a small inland town about 8 km south of Nykøbing, and Marielyst is the beach resort on the coast about 12 km south of Nykøbing. Houses listed under Væggerløse are mostly a short drive or cycle from Marielyst's beach.
Yes. The soft white sand at Marielyst was judged particularly suitable for children, and the beach slopes gently into calm Baltic water. The resort adds minigolf at the Golf and Fun Park and a go-kart centre for older children.
Yes for most visitors. Houses are spread through summer-house streets, public transport from Copenhagen takes around four hours, and day trips to Nykøbing Falster, Gedser or Bøtø Nor are far easier by car.
Copenhagen is the practical choice, about an hour and a half from Marielyst by car. If you are driving from Germany instead, the ferry from Puttgarden on Fehmarn lands at Rødbyhavn on Lolland, and Gedser has a car ferry from Rostock.
Less than you might expect. The beach runs for around 20 km, so even in high season there is usually room to spread out, and the houses sit back from it in quiet summer-house streets.
