Marielyst, Bøtø and Idestrup (east Falster)
Most of our houses in this region are here, listed under Væggerløse, which is the postal area for Marielyst. A wide sandy beach runs for miles down the Baltic coast, and the resort centre has supermarkets, restaurants and bike hire. Idestrup's houses are further south near Bøtø, where pine plantations and a bird reserve sit behind the dunes. Copenhagen airport is about an hour and a half away.
Best for: Families who want a long sandy beach and shops within cycling distance
Not for you if: You want somewhere quiet in July, when Marielyst is one of Denmark's busiest summer-house resorts.
Møn and Bogø (Stege, Borre, Askeby, Bogø By)
Møns Klint, white chalk cliffs above the Baltic, is on the east coast near Borre, with steep wooden stairs to the beach and the GeoCenter museum on top. Stege is the island's small town, still entered through a medieval brick gate. Askeby is in the west near the causeway to Bogø, a small farming island. The skies over Møn are dark enough for good stargazing. Copenhagen airport is about an hour and a quarter away.
Best for: Walkers, stargazers and anyone who wants cliffs rather than resorts
Not for you if: You need a lot of choice: we only have a handful of houses on Møn.
Rødby and Dannemare (south Lolland)
South Lolland is reclaimed land behind a long sea dike, flat enough to cycle anywhere. Lalandia at Rødbyhavn is a large indoor water park open all year, and the ferry to Puttgarden in Germany takes about 45 minutes. Dannemare's houses are near the beaches at Hummingen and Kramnitze, quieter and further west. Copenhagen airport is around an hour and three quarters away.
Best for: Families who want a water park nearby and a short ferry to Germany
Not for you if: You mind construction: work on the Fehmarn Belt tunnel is under way at Rødbyhavn.
Gedser, Nysted and Stubbekøbing (harbour towns)
Gedser is at the southern tip of Falster, the most southerly point in Denmark, with the ferry to Rostock taking about two hours. Nysted, across the water on Lolland, is a small town with a harbour and Aalholm castle. Stubbekøbing faces Møn from north Falster and has a motorcycle museum. All three are quiet outside July. Copenhagen is 75 minutes to an hour and a half away.
Best for: Couples who like small harbours and quiet roads
Not for you if: You want a sandy beach on the doorstep; several of these towns face fjords or narrow shores.
Nakskov, Fejø and north Lolland (Bandholm, Sakskøbing, Horslunde, Harpelunde, Søllested)
Nakskov is western Lolland's main town, with the long Albuen spit and its birdlife to the west. Fejø, reached by a short ferry from Kragenæs, is known for its orchards. Bandholm, on the north coast, is next to Knuthenborg Safaripark, the region's biggest family day out. Horslunde, Harpelunde and Søllested are farming villages. Copenhagen airport is about two hours from Nakskov.
Best for: Visitors after space, apple orchards and island ferries
Not for you if: You want a resort; this is farmland and scattered villages with a handful of houses.
