Fur suits groups wanting a small Limfjord island, reached by a ferry that crosses in about four minutes. The island is only about 8 km long, and every visit by car means a ferry crossing.
Fur is a small island in the Limfjord, 21.8 km² and roughly 8.2 km long by 5.3 km wide, with fewer than a thousand residents. Nederby is the main village. The ground is moler, roughly one third clay and two thirds diatomite, and it holds fossils more than 55 million years old, and Fur Museum in Nederby, not far from the ferry, shows what has been found in it. Forest covers a small part of the island, mostly in the north, and about 20 studios and workshops welcome visitors. The homes cluster closely, and several sleep eight or more, with the largest sleeping many more, so Fur works for groups. Most have a fireplace and some have a sauna.
In Nederby, near the ferry port. Natural history and geology, with local fossils of insects, birds, fish and plants.
Fur belongs to Skive Municipality, and the writer Jeppe Aakjær's farm Jenle, close to Skive, is open to the public.
The best-known of the Limfjord islands, with Nykøbing Mors as its commercial port.
Fjord town where the wide western Limfjord meets the narrow east, with the Frederik VII Canal, now a well-preserved heritage site.
Billund Airport is the practical choice, about 1 hour 20 minutes by road from Skive plus the run out to the ferry at Branden. The Sleipner ferry from Branden takes cars and crosses in about four minutes, running around the clock. A car is the sensible way to arrive, though pedestrians and bicycles travel free.
The ferry runs day and night, every 15 minutes between 05:00 and 19:00, half-hourly until 01:00 and hourly after that, so a late arrival is no problem. Tickets cannot be booked ahead, so just turn up. Check opening times for the museum and studios before an off-season visit, and expect the island to feel very quiet then.
No. Tickets cannot be booked ahead, and the ferry sails 72 times a day around the clock, every 15 minutes in the daytime. The crossing from Branden takes about four minutes.
Yes, and it is one of the main things to do. About 200 volcanic ash layers run through the diatomite, alongside fossils of fish, birds, insects, wood and plants, and Fur Museum offers guided tours with a geologist.
Small. The island measures about 8.2 km by 5.3 km and covers 21.8 km², with a population a little over 700. Pedestrians and bicycles ride the ferry free, so bringing bikes costs nothing extra.
Yes, within reason. Several homes here sleep eight or more, and the largest sleep many more. Book early for high summer.
Yes. Fur Museum in Nederby covers the island's cultural and social history as well as its geology, and about 20 studios and workshops welcome visitors. Forest covers the northern part of the island.
